Health officials say 14 kids in the Clark County location are validated to have measles amidst an outbreak, and that other people in the area could have been exposed.

Since January 1, officials said there have been 12 kids between 1 -10 years old and two youths ages 11 -18 with verified cases of the measles.

Of those kids, 13 were unimmunized for the infection, and one was not verified in getting the vaccine.

Measles signs begin with a fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash.

“Measles can be so infectious that you can be in a space, and if you’re vulnerable, 2 hours after somebody with measles left, and still get the disease,” said Dr. Alan Melnick, the director of public health for Clark County.

If you or your child show indications of measles, call your health care service provider prior to coming in so they can limit exposing anyone else in the waiting room.

Multnomah County Health said they have had no verified cases yet, however stated there is a danger of direct exposure.

Officials said those who are contaminated went to public areas while contagious, consisting of the Portland International Airport, Portland-area Costco and IKEA stores, a number of health care facilities, schools, and other locations across the area.

“The populations we’re really concerned about are infants under 12 months of age, because they’re generally not old sufficient to get the vaccination,” stated Melnick.

Health officials also say pregnant ladies are at risk of having miscarriages if exposed.
